4:00-6:00PM PROTEST A.L.E.C., CORPORATE INFLUENCE, AND JOB CUTS! REYNOLDS AMERICAN HEADQUARTERS! 401 N. MAIN ST
At the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), paid lobbyists and paid-off politicians work behind closed doors to rewrite laws in favor of corporations. On February, Wednesday 29, 2012, Occupiers in New York, Oakland, Mexico City, and over 80 other cities will take part in a coordinated National Day of Action to Shut Down the Corporations:
SHUT DOWN THE CORPORATONS!: #F29 NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST ALEC
Occupations have been preparing a variety of decentralized actions in response to Occupy Portland’s call to target the American Legislative Exchange Council:
“We specifically call on people to target corporations that are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The biggest corporations in America, like ExxonMobil, Bank of America, BP, Monsanto, Pfizer, and Wal-Mart use ALEC to buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves only the interests of corporations and not people. They then duplicate and spread this corporate legislation in Washington, D.C. and in state legislatures across the country.”

Occupy the Ports: Wilmington @ Greenfield Park (mtg spot)12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Occupy Wilmington NC has permits to protest trade deals that have been disastrous to US jobs, while shortchanging labor in Central America and China. We chose to picket the north gate of the ports, in solidarity with our local unions.
Join us. We need everybody at the gate by Noon, Friday. March 2. This will be a public education event. There are many different reasons to support this action: better wages for truckers and longshoremen, adequate environmental policy with improved port and river maintenance, or just to protest the heart of the 1%’s labor and commerce exploitations.
We will be meeting (and parking) at Greenfield Lake Park and other locations. OCCUShuttles will be available.

Silence Is Violence Protest: Sexual Violence and Administrative Irresponsibility at Appalachian State University @ IG Greer, Appalachian State University1:45 pm – 3:45 pm
On Friday, March 2nd at 2:30 pm the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of ASU will attend a general faculty meeting at IG Greer. Friends of sexual assault survivors are organizing a silent protest outside beginning at 1:45 pm. The message?: Silence is Violence. Appalachian State’s administration has mishandled and ignored the cases of these survivors and the cases of survivors who have come forward since the beginning of the current awareness campaign. App State should be held responsible for their harmful and ignorant responses to sexual assaults on campus.
Call for action by one of the organizers. Please read to understand the seriousness of the issues at ASU:
“In April 2011, a close friend of mine (Survivor One) was sexually assaulted by three men and raped by two in succession; four of these men were Appalachian football players, accompanied by one friend. Given the men’s prestige on campus and her emotional state, she decided not report the incidents to campus or local authorities and to tell only a few people. In September 2011, she heard through the grapevine that the two men who raped her had also recently raped another woman (Survivor Two). She contacted the second survivor and the two decided to support each other in bringing the assaults to the attention of both the Watauga County Sheriff’s Department and the University. Currently, charges are pending in Survivor Two’s case, but Survivor One’s case is unfortunately not being picked up due to lack of substantial physical evidence. In the meantime, the cases were handled by the Student Conduct Board, a judicial board of professors and students who deal with breaches of the Student Conduct Code. In Survivor One’s case, 3 men were found guilty of lesser charges such as harassment and hostile communication; two of them were football players, and as such were suspended from one football game. They have suffered no further consequences. In the same case, another man was found guilty of rape, and the final man was found innocent of all charges due to the board being tied at a 3-3 vote. In Survivor Two’s case, both men (one of whom was found guilty of rape in Survivor One’s case) were found guilty of rape as well as other charges, and suspended for a minimum of eight semesters. These men have since been allowed back on campus, with no notification to the survivors, and one is on the roster for the 2012 Appalachian State University football team.
Since organizing a Facebook awareness campaign, we’ve received messages from several women who have come forward to tell us the story of how their sexual assault cases were mishandled by the University. One woman’s movements were restricted because the University placed equal blame on both the perpetrator and herself. She was told by a member of the administration that she “shouldn’t have sex if she wasn’t ready for the consequences.” Other women have received no reply to their plea for help at all. There is a serious problem at Appalachian State University reaching far beyond a few women’s experiences- it affects everyone.”

Alamance County Superior Court, 9 a.m.Come to a party to celebrate the diversity of our communities. Join us for a night of Latino music, food and speakers as we gather to recognize our oneness as children of a loving God. As a nation of immigrants, we gather to express solidarity with our Latino sisters and brothers, many of whom have fled poverty and left behind loved ones in search of a better life and basic human needs.
On April 8, 2009, seven immigrant-rights activists* were arrested outside the Alamance County Detention Center in Graham during a theatrical performance to call attention to the county’s anti-immigrant policies. Almost three years later, six of those activists will stand trial March 5 in Alamance County Superior Court. The seventh member of the group, Juan Montes, died unexpectedly following surgery on Oct. 30, 2009. Juan was 44. He is survived by his wife, Maria, and daughters, Anna and Naomi.
Alamance County law enforcement has been accused of racial profiling, and for arresting Latinos for minor crimes, then turning them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials for deportation, breaking apart families in the process. These practices have had a chilling effect on Alamance’s Latino community.
On Saturday, March 3, the six Alamance defendants are hosting a Festival of Hope as a pre-trial kick-off. Please join us for a press conference and Vigil of Hope at the Alamance County Detention Center (109 Maple St. Graham 27253 take I40/85 exit 145 north one mile) at 5:15 followed by the festival of Hope at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church (320 E. Viridiana Martínez, NC DREAM Team co-founder

Environmental Film Festival: “Dirt!: The Movie” Tonight @ Carrboro Century Center4:30 pm – 6:00 pm
An excellent 4-part, free environmental film festival at Carrboro’s Century Center is underway!
Carbon Nation was screened this past weekend. It’s a documentary about climate change solutions. The film is an optimistic discovery of what people are already doing, what we as a nation could be doing, and what the world needs to do to prevent (or slow down) the impending climate crisis. We already have the technology to combat most of the worst-case scenarios of climate change, and it is very good business as well. We meet a host of entertaining and endearing characters along the way, all making a difference and working toward solving climate change.
Plan B: Mobilizing To Save Civilization This film, from the Earth Policy Institute and based on the book World On The Edge by Lester Brown, details the vice closing around us: a quadruple squeeze of global warming and shortages in food, water, and energy. Then it explains the path out—and how little time we have left to take that path.
Catch these other segments!
Sunday, March 4, 2012, 4:30 p.m.: Dirt!
Dirt! The Movie is an insightful film that tells the story of the glorious and unappreciated material beneath our feet. Inspired by William Bryant Logan’s acclaimed book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, this film takes a look into the history and current state of the living organic matter that we come from and will later return to. Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, it brings to life the environmental, economic, social, and political impact of soil. Dirt! The Movie will make you want to get dirty! Length: 1 hr 20 min.
