The Ides of Love March @ NC State Belltower11:00 am – 2:00 pm
On Thursday, March 15th, we will march from the N.C. State Bell Tower to the General Assembly Building AGAINST Amendment One!
From the facebook event page (go there to RSVP):
We want to show our State and our Nation that the people of North Carolina do not support amending our Constitution with this ban, and that we will virulently defend the right for a union to be recognized by the state. In the past, we have codified language that excluded both women and minority races; let us learn from our history and not repeat those same mistakes on May 8, 2012.
The motto for the fine state of North Carolina has always rung with heraldic clarity: we are a state that lives according to principle and truth; to be rather than to seem. Sadly, the stable foundations of our state have been put to the test, and we stand in the face of those who would restrict base civil rights. We honor the primary statement of the original document of our governance with its assurance of equal rights for all, regardless of creed or orientation.
If you are against amending the North Carolina State Constitution with discrimination, come join us on March 15th, 2012. If you are proud to live in the state that launched civil rights to the forefront of our national discussion, join with us for the march. We believe that only through an expression of solidarity can we give a voice to the voiceless, to those the state would seek to exclude from the civil right of marriage.
“A vote on the same sex marriage amendment has nothing to do with your personal and religious opinion on same sex marriage but everything to do with whether or not you believe discrimination should be codified and legalized constitutionally. We should never seek to codify discrimination into the very heart and framework of our Constitution.”
-Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, IIAll faiths, all religions, all races, and all people are welcome.

Talking About Amendment One! @ United Church of Chapel Hill1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Talking About Amendment One: How to Make “Difficult” Conversations about LGBTQ Equality Easy, Compelling and Connecting! Organized by the United Church of Chapel Hill.
With the statewide North Carolina vote on Amendment One coming up, activists who support all kinds of families, including LGBTQ ones, may find themselves looking for ways to effectively communicate about the negative effects of this amendment: the harms it can pose to unmarried couples of all genders, and to single women and children of unmarried parents.
Would you like to find ways to tell people about this Amendment? On Sunday, March 18, join NYC communications-expert Dian Killian and learn:
A way of communicating that draws on common values to foster shared understanding and trust — even when the others may be distrusting, dismissive or judgmental.
To self-manage your reactions in challenging conversations so you can remain present and effective.
To talk about inclusion and equality in a way that lands with others, changing how they see and experience the world.
To shift hearts as well minds! Please join the event organizers for this opportunity to build community and skills within the movement for LGBTQ rights! Registration.
This workshop is presented in partnership with The Coalition to Protect NC Families. A link to a pdf of the event flier.
A contribution is requested to help cover the costs of the workshop, support the efforts of Protect NC, and honor the time/energy of Dian, the workshop leader. Training: Legal Paths to Fight Foreclosure Fraud @ Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Orange County Justice United , in partnership with the North Carolina Housing Coalition and Legal Aid, is hosting a training which will explore litigation options available to homeowners facing fraudulent foreclosure processes. Lawyers from Legal Aid will describe the legal paths available to homeowners who suspect that fraud took place in the origination of their loan or in the servicing of their loan afterwards. This training will link mortgage fraud research actions conducted by Justice United and allied agencies across the state with practical steps for individual foreclosure prevention. Join us and learn how you can help defend our homes and communities in the face of the ongoing housing crisis.
CONTEXT: Joining allied groups of NC United Power, Orange County Justice United’s foreclosure action team undertook a research action to investigate foreclosure fraud in North Carolina. Over last fall and winter, the team reviewed 240 foreclosure case files in Orange County for evidence of robo-signing: the production of false or forged legal documents which lead to fraudulently executed foreclosures. This training represents the next step for the team as we use the results of our broad research for applications on the individual level. The
foreclosure action team invites you to join us at this training and in future collaboration towards protecting homeowners from illegal foreclosures.PLEASE RSVP TO: ross.devin@gmail.com

Presentation on Author Stephen Hren’s New Book, “Tales from the Sustainable Underground A Wild Journey with People Who Care More about the Planet than the Law” @ Internationalist Books & Community Center7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
International Books is hosting a special presentation of Stephen Hren’s new book:
“Tales from the Sustainable Underground: A Wild Journey with People Who Care More about the Planet than the Law”
Activists striving for any type of social change often find themselves operating on the fringes of legal and social norms. Many experience difficulties when their innovative ideas run afoul of antiquated laws and regulations that favor a big business, energy- and material-intensive approach.Tales from the Sustainable Underground is packed with the stories of some of these pioneers, who care more for the planet than the rules, whether they’re engaged in natural building, permaculture, community development, or ecologically based art. Meet courageous and inspiring individuals such as: solar guru Ed Eaton; radical urban permaculturalists, Scott Kellogg and Stacy Pettigrew; and artist, eco-architect and intuitive builder, Matt Bua.Both entertaining and informative, the profiles in this book provide a unique lens through which to view deeper questions about societal structures preventing us from attaining a more sustainable world. By examining such issues as the nature of property rights and the function of art in society, the author raises profound questions about how our social attitudes and mores contribute to our current destructive paradigm.

National Day of Action: #M25 NC March to the Statehouses to Reclaim Voter Sovereignty! @ Begins in Fletcher Park (entrances on St. Mary's St & Glenwood Ave)11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Occupy North Carolina calls upon all citizens and all Occupations throughout the state to join together in a Freedom March and Occupy the Highway this spring, as we march to the Statehouse. Walkupy’s Greensboro Call to action makes Raleigh, NC a central focus of this National March to the Statehouses to restore voter sovereignty. We propose a route from Winston Salem, NC to our Statehouse in Raleigh, NC, passing through Greensboro, Burlington, Chapel Hill and Durham.
On March 25th, come march the final mile to the NC Statehouse, where we will hold a rally to end corporate influence over our legislature and public officials! Restore voter sovereignty!
Preliminary Raleigh #M25 schedule:
11:00am-1:00pm Meet at Fletcher Park in Raleigh. Bring your family, a lunch and enjoy the park while we socialize, soap box, etc.
1:00pm-2:00pm March the final Freedom March mile from Fletcher Park past Occupy Raleigh camp to the NC Legislature (approx. 1.5 mi.)
2:00pm-4:00pm Rally at Bicentennial Plaza in front of the NC LegislatureThe Freedom March will travel through communities hardest hit by economic inequality and political disenfranchisement, stopping at important historical points along the way. We will talk to those people who have suffered the most due to our corrupt political system, and carry their stories with us. Along the way we will collect signatures on a People’s Petition to be read at the end of our journey on the steps of our state’s Capitol. We will hold our elected officials accountable. We will remind them that they work for the people. We will remind them that being an elected representative is a civic duty, not a business enterprise.
We call on people from all corners of North Carolina who cannot participate in the full March to conduct freedom rides into Raleigh. Buy a bus ticket, ride in the front of the bus and spread the word of economic and political justice. If you must drive, drive. Carpool. Fly. Join us however you can to reclaim voter sovereignty in this election year.
Occupy Raleigh’s Statement of Action in Solidarity with Walkupy & Occupy the Highway:
We the People of Occupy Raleigh stand in solidarity with the Walking Occupation and pledge our support and participation in this action. We call upon the legislature to reject Citizens United and to no longer recognize corporate personhood in the state of North Carolina.
We bear witness to the corruption of our democratic processes that has become business as usual in our state. We bear witness to the devastation wrought upon our neighbors and friends through predatory and irresponsible lending practices. We bear witness to the dismantling of citizens’ basic constitutional rights to Free Speech, Peaceful Assembly and even Due Process. And we stand in opposition to all plans to disenfranchise voters.
We bear witness to a campaign of fear and uncertainty being waged against the people of North Carolina and the Nation at large. Families are being turned out of their homes. Essential healthcare is being withheld. Jobs are cut, and factories closed. Homeowners, consumers and students are saddled with crushing debt. Rights and Liberties are being stripped away. American communities are being destroyed. And our representatives work covertly behind closed doors where the People’s voice is silenced. These injustices must end.
