Occupy Chapel Hill Presents
A Teach-in Series with Dr. Sally Goerner
The third presentation of the series will address “Societal Learning and the Psychology of Great Change.”
Societal collapse is a much more common event than most people realize, and we appear to be on the cusp. The only way to survive today’s choice point is to learn as a whole society, yet our political landscape has become so polarized and corrupt that it is often impossible to talk even with family and friends of a different persuasion. This talk explores how to help our society learn its way past today’s crisis. Instead of losing all that we hold most dear, the key to effective learning is to focus on bringing our deepest values to a whole new level of function and beauty. Like a butterfly breaking from its cocoon, we can shed layers of social and economic oppression and transform into an even more noble society than we have ever been before.

The New American Economy:
The Hard Science and Commonsense of What Needs to Come Next
Our political system has become an oligarchy, a society and economy run by and for the wealthiest few, with no regard for the harm done to the many. Many excellent analyses explain why Trickledown is destroying our economy and democracy, but without a sound alternative, the mainstream public sees nowhere to turn. This talk uses new understandings of how nature builds durably healthy networks to explain how to make democratic free-enterprise networks healthy as well. The result is a precise, commonsense, “purple state” vision of how to avoid collapse and achieve the kind of lasting prosperity for all that lies at the heart of the American Dream, but which now seems so out of our grasp.

The Cycles of Civilization and Our Own Troubled Times
New understandings how real-world networks evolve through new stages of development clarify our own place in history. Instead of seeing 2012 as the end of the world, this lens suggests we are actually facing the beginning of a new Integral stage of civilization. Based on the root metaphor of an ecosystem or web, as this already emerging shift solidifies, its more realistic understanding of nature’s rules for whole-system health will allow us to create a level of happiness and health almost unimaginable today. This talk provides the hard science and common sense explanation of what civilization will look like, and why this is not utopian fantasy, but the natural next step in our development.
