Occupy North Carolina calls upon all citizens and all Occupations throughout the state to join together in a Freedom March and Occupy the Highway this spring, as we march to the Statehouse. Walkupy’s Greensboro Call to action makes Raleigh, NC a central focus of this National March to the Statehouses to restore voter sovereignty. We propose a route from Winston Salem, NC to our Statehouse in Raleigh, NC, passing through Greensboro, Burlington, Chapel Hill and Durham.
On March 25th, come march the final mile to the NC Statehouse, where we will hold a rally to end corporate influence over our legislature and public officials! Restore voter sovereignty!
Preliminary Raleigh #M25 schedule:
11:00am-1:00pm Meet at Fletcher Park in Raleigh. Bring your family, a lunch and enjoy the park while we socialize, soap box, etc.
1:00pm-2:00pm March the final Freedom March mile from Fletcher Park past Occupy Raleigh camp to the NC Legislature (approx. 1.5 mi.)
2:00pm-4:00pm Rally at Bicentennial Plaza in front of the NC Legislature
The Freedom March will travel through communities hardest hit by economic inequality and political disenfranchisement, stopping at important historical points along the way. We will talk to those people who have suffered the most due to our corrupt political system, and carry their stories with us. Along the way we will collect signatures on a People’s Petition to be read at the end of our journey on the steps of our state’s Capitol. We will hold our elected officials accountable. We will remind them that they work for the people. We will remind them that being an elected representative is a civic duty, not a business enterprise.
We call on people from all corners of North Carolina who cannot participate in the full March to conduct freedom rides into Raleigh. Buy a bus ticket, ride in the front of the bus and spread the word of economic and political justice. If you must drive, drive. Carpool. Fly. Join us however you can to reclaim voter sovereignty in this election year.
Occupy Raleigh’s Statement of Action in Solidarity with Walkupy & Occupy the Highway:
We the People of Occupy Raleigh stand in solidarity with the Walking Occupation and pledge our support and participation in this action.
We call upon the legislature to reject Citizens United and to no longer recognize corporate personhood in the state of North Carolina.
We bear witness to the corruption of our democratic processes that has become business as usual in our state. We bear witness to the devastation wrought upon our neighbors and friends through predatory and irresponsible lending practices. We bear witness to the dismantling of citizens’ basic constitutional rights to Free Speech, Peaceful Assembly and even Due Process. And we stand in opposition to all plans to disenfranchise voters.
We bear witness to a campaign of fear and uncertainty being waged against the people of North Carolina and the Nation at large. Families are being turned out of their homes. Essential healthcare is being withheld. Jobs are cut, and factories closed. Homeowners, consumers and students are saddled with crushing debt. Rights and Liberties are being stripped away. American communities are being destroyed. And our representatives work covertly behind closed doors where the People’s voice is silenced. These injustices must end.
